Comparing Cold Brew and Iced Coffee

What's the Difference?

Cold brew and iced coffee have a lot of similarities. They look similar, they're both served cold, and some may even say they taste similar. So, what's the difference?

Cold Brew

Although the name might lead you to think otherwise, cold brew isn't actually brewed, it's steeped. Cold brew is made from steeping coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period of time - a minimum of twelve hours but ideally closer to 24. This slow process is supposed create a flavour profile that's gentle and aromatic.

Iced Coffee

Iced coffee, on the other hand, is exactly what it sounds like: coffee that's been brewed hot and then cooled down, either with ice or in a fridge.

Which Tastes Better?

Cold brew has a punchier flavour because the long steep allows the coffee taste to come through more intensely. Some would describe the flavour as velvety and smooth. Iced coffee has a lighter flavour, less intense on the coffee front. It can come down to personal preference. If you're looking for something rich and flavourful, go for cold brew! If you like a light and refreshing coffee taste, iced coffee is for you!
